I Love Quicksilver’s quick reminders

Why would I need this?

Sometimes I just to dash off a quick reminder — Call Hakim at 6 — and I don’t want to open a full-blown app or I want something even quicker than the pretty quick TinyAlarm. (Which reminds me, I really need to donate. I’ve been using it happily for years now.)

How do I …

Quicksilver, my love. Activate it by pressing control-space, press period to enter text mode, and type your reminder. Press tab to move to the second pane, begin typing Speak Text until that action appears.

Press control-enter. Note that this doesn’t run the action, but puts the whole thing (your reminder and action) in the first pane. Because this is an action now, the second pane now shows the Run action. Screenshots below. (I’m using the Flashlight Interface. It’s available via Quicksilver > Plugins menu and can change Flashlight’s colors via Quicksilver > Preferences > Appearance.)

We don’t want the Run action because it will run the reminder right now and we want the reminder to run later. While in the second pane, press the down arrow key to see other available actions. In the screenshot below, my cursor is on the Run after Delay… action, and there is now a third pane. Before we go to the third pane, note that Run at Time is also listed in the available actions. Press tab to navigate to the third pane and enter the amount of time to delay before running our action. We can use h, m and s for hours, minutes, and seconds, respectively; 1h 20m 2s would delays 1 hour 20 minutes and 2 seconds.

I’m demoing the Run after Delay action, but it would make more sense to use the Run at Time action for this reminder. And there could be problems with having our reminder spoken to us. What if we go to the bathroom or walk away from the computer? If a reminder is spoken and no one is around to hear it … ?

Using the same steps, let’s use the Large Type action instead.

So we can see this at 6:

This reminder will be much larger on your computer screen.

Why doesn’t it work on my machine?

Note that in order to use these actions, you need to install the following plugins and you may need to change your Quicksilver preference settings:

  • (No plugins needed)

You may need to enable the Speak Text action. (See screenshot below.)

Wow/Meh. What else ya got?

This is part of a series of some of the ways I love and use Quicksilver. If you’re new to Quicksilver, check out the Quicksilver Setup Mini Guide for tips on configuration.
